How does residue nicotine on clothes affect a baby?

My godson is always sick. His father is a chain smoker, although he never smokes around the baby, he smells of smoke. I tell him that the smell of the smoke is still harmful to his baby but he doesn't believe me. The boy is just one year old and spent his first birthday in the hospital with a lung infection. Please advise.
