Does Terro ant killer work?

I came home today from the store and found my dog's food bowl completely covered in ants! I sprinkled some cinnamon around the baseboard to get me by until tomorrow (it's been working pretty great so far!), but i'm looking for something to kill them off. Does anyone know if Terro works? I have read a lot of great reviews, but the closest store that sells it is a good 20 mins away so I want to make my trip worthwhile. Also, does anyone know if Terro is okay to use around dogs? I would hate for my little dog to get sick from the Terro laying around (of course I won't let her eat it or anything, but I mean chemical residue....).
